Introduction (Top)

Many people are happy with religion. It is their personal friend, alter ego, shelter from a harsh world! This is the primary problem with religion. It allows people to neglect social inter dependencies and responsibilities by delving into the psychological masturbation which is religion. As such it prevents a whole side of civilization from developing. That is the side of civilization which would comprehend and assist humans in finding meaningfulness for their lives by enhancing, proliferating human contact as opposed to kneeling down to the impertinent, non existent "spirit realm". It surprises the hell out of me that for thousands of years religious people have been bowing down to spirits that nobody has ever seen.

The religious people have gods so they can't understand how others feel meaningless, but the reality is a meaningless one and the likelihood of a different person seeing this truth is high although, the likelihood of a different person fitting under the umbrella of "believing in gods that don't even exist" is not absolute. Not only is it not absolute but it isn't even desirable as it neglects social dependencies which need to develop.

Do ants build churches? No, and though they exist on one of life's lowest levels, their economy is flawless. Unless an impenetrable connection between the existence of churches and gods and the success of our economic processes is established churches and gods stand as parasites and afflictions on Humanity. A primitive means of understanding things about ourselves (ISM) that are much more clearly defined by science.

The most accurate argument against religious people's longing after "the spirit realm" and "reliance upon unseen gods" is really very simple. Ask the religious person this question: If you were deathly ill to whom would you turn? And when they reply "the doctor" it will be obvious in whom they truly believe, science, they just aren't ready to admit it yet and carry on.

Science has been bowing down before religion for too long! We have to get tough with religious people. I don't think many religious people understand just how complex the scientific processes which create their houses, clothes, utilities, medicines and foods are. As a consequence of this they have no respect for science. It's time they get some.

Who Did What (Top)

  1. Who built General Motors? We did!
  2. Who built Automobiles? We did!
  3. Who sings our songs? We do!
  4. Who makes our movies? We do!
  5. Who heals us when we are sick? We do!
  6. Who do you turn to when you are lonely? People!

STOP pretending there is more! Stop being a traitor to humankind by giving your love to gods and start loving the ones who do everything for you, people!

I saw a tiny baby girl in the arms of her mother, she was clinging on as if her mother was the center of the entire universe. And I asked myself; with so much love between them, in the beginning, why do they send their children to churches to transfer their love to gods? And I realized that this was the first great act of treachery which humans bestow upon their children and the foundation of many separations that exist in our societies.

I was passing out flyers and a couple pretty girls asked me if I believed in evolution. I said "yes' (under statement of the decade) and they ask why, so I told them that our bodies are chemical mechanisms. They became rude, walked to a trash can and threw my flyer into it. Here we have a man, me (humble as a flee) trying to educate people on issues that are long over due (the entire modern world is run by science) and how does religion respond: With violence and rejection. Now you have to realize humanity has a problem in religion. I'll say it again: I fear religious people because they will kill you to stop you from speaking against their cult, especially if you speak the truth because that is precisely what religion denies. This is a big money issue, we are dealing with PCs who are making billions per year selling gods.

The Roots Of Religion In Society (Top)

Knowing as we do that Humans are complex beasts with complex needs it is immediately obvious that we would require at least marginally complex schemes to explain the world around us and ourselves. A few thousand years ago when religions originated Humans understood far less about the planet we live on and the conditions of life on this planet than we do today. It was in this very primitive and ignorant state of existence that most existing religions evolved. The signs of it are dispersed throughout the literature of the religions. For example in the old testament it speaks of "killing the first born" etc. such things are not even within the scope of reality in modern civilization. This immediately indicates to us that this material was created for a people who engaged a way of life which none of us alive today could likely even imagine. The primitive mind searching in the darkness of ignorance for the answers to a complex phenomena called existence. What they left for us was simply the best they could come up with at the time. An ugly, vague, partial explanation of what was happening around them and what it meant to them as a primitive people.

Looking back with our most complete understanding yet of who, what, and where we are gives us new startlingly clear perspectives.

We know, for example, plate tectonics which explains continental drift and the eventuality of catastrophes on land. Such things could not be explained previously except by the hand of the "spirit realm". With just this knowledge in hand we are hard pressed to find a function for these gods of primitive civilization. It seems that all the things we previously required the "spirit realm" to explain are now being explained to the point of predictability by our knowledge of science.

The discoveries of mankind do not end with those of the environment (Man is a part of the environment, but I'll pass that issue up here for brevity). Understanding ourselves has always been a rather large problem and there are several reasons for this. We now know that Humans have some definite characteristics up and above the need of food, water and shelter. Namely Humans are Insatiable, Selfish, and Meaningless and are each on a quest to solve these not so desirable characteristics.

Not so desirable characteristics: ISM

Is it fun to bore with familiarity and be Insatiable?
By no means. It is a source of much Human grief and suffering.
Is it fun to be Selfish beasts trying to cooperate to build and grow?
By no means. It is a source of much Human grief and suffering.
Is it fun to be Meaningless, knowing that life is a haphazard free energy manipulation?
By no means. It is a source of much Human grief and suffering.

So now we know why "understanding ourselves has always been a rather large problem". We are not very nice creatures and therefore chose to simply ignore these realities and maintain whatever "lighter", "easier", perhaps even "more fun" explanations we can create or find.

But now at UCOM we have a dawning. The dawning of truth as it pertains to Humans. And with this dawning, new knowledge in hand, we can look back one more time at the religions of the past and take a clear perspective. Namely that Humans are Meaningless but require Meaning in their lives before they can function and consequently must create it artificially. From this we can see the strength of man's need for the "spirit realm". It wasn't just about understanding "the great commotions of nature", it was about understanding "why we exist". And now it is clear why every primitive civilization of Humans regardless of their location on the planet created their own version of the "spirit realm", or gods. Because being Meaningless is a part of being an animal on this planet and being Human means being smart enough to ask "why" and if we could not answer that then we could not justify our reason for struggling so hard with nature to survive.

From this we do not even have to ask "why did mankind create gods", but rather we can make the statement 'how could mankind have existed without gods?". He could not have existed without gods! Which is why he created them. But now is the time for advancement. We must move on to the next phase in the development of civilization. We are strong enough to face Meaninglessness and carry the weight of it into tomorrow logically and realistically. We have 5,000,000,000 people so we are not alone. It's time to realize that we are all we've got and deal with it. The "spirit realm" must have been fun, hell more than half the people still hide there, but it has to go and those people need to stop hiding and start working with the rest of us to help solve these and other problems.

It is a great leap out into the darkness of nothingness we will be taking by finally forfeiting our gods, but it is a step we must take. We must accept the truth of ISM, plate tectonics, and all the other sciences revolving around us to master our civilization and ourselves. Or what would we have our children say of us "oh, that is mom and dad on their knees in front of that statue, they aren't coming with us into the future because they love those statues more than us".

And the moral of this story is: Any inflexibly rigid system of behavior which impedes progress constitutes an unfavorable addiction and is no better than a common drug addiction. Religion is no exception. If they claim it hurts nobody then they are very wrong because it hurts everybody. By hiding from truth they force the rest of Humankind to endure the weight of reality and scientific progress alone! We will not have that breech of cooperation or any other.
